Antigua is small, but where you stay shapes your whole trip. The island is roughly 280 square kilometres, yet the drive from the busy north-west beaches to the yachting harbours of the south can take the best part of an hour. Pick the right base and your days are beaches, food and sunsets. Pick the wrong one and they are spent in the back of a taxi.
We are a family-run apartment business in the middle of the island, so we spend a lot of time helping guests work out where they actually want to be. This guide walks through every main area, who each one suits, the types of places to stay, when to go and how to get around, so you can choose with confidence.

Pick the area first, then the place
Most Antigua accommodation guides start with a list of hotels. We think the area matters more. Ask yourself three questions:
- What do you want on your doorstep? A calm swimming beach, a marina, restaurants and bars, or peace and quiet?
- Will you hire a car? If not, choose an area where what you want is walkable, or stay somewhere central so taxis are short.
- How long are you staying? For a week or more, a kitchen, laundry and space to spread out start to matter more than a swim-up bar.
The best areas to stay in Antigua
St John’s: best for culture, food and shopping
The capital sits on the north-west coast and is the island’s commercial heart. You get the cathedral, the public market, duty-free shopping at Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay, and the widest choice of local restaurants and bars. It is close to the airport too.
Good for: short stays, business trips, culture and food lovers. Less good for: beach holidays, as you will drive or take a taxi to the sand. Many visitors pass through St John’s rather than stay in it.
Dickenson Bay: best for an easy beach holiday
Just north of St John’s, Dickenson Bay has a long, calm stretch of white sand, the island’s busiest strip of beach resorts and plenty of watersports. It is a short drive to town and to the airport.
Good for: first-timers who want a beach on the doorstep and everything organised. Less good for: anyone looking for quiet or a local feel.
Runaway Bay: best for budget beach stays
Next to Dickenson Bay, Runaway Bay offers the same side of the island with smaller, often better-value places to stay.
Jolly Harbour: best for families and medium-term stays
On the west coast, Jolly Harbour is a marina complex with a supermarket, restaurants and a golf course, close to some of the island’s best-loved beaches, including Jolly Beach, Ffryes Beach, Darkwood Beach and Valley Church. The water on this side of the island is generally calm.
Good for: families, self-caterers and anyone who likes having shops nearby. Less good for: a quick airport run, as it is one of the further areas from V.C. Bird International Airport.
The west coast and St Mary: best for luxury resorts and calm beaches
South of Jolly Harbour, the parish of St Mary has sheltered bays and several of Antigua’s best-known luxury resorts, including Curtain Bluff, Carlisle Bay, Hermitage Bay and Cocobay. Five Islands, between St John’s and Jolly Harbour, is home to Galley Bay and Hawksbill.
Good for: honeymoons, couples and barefoot luxury. Less good for: tight budgets.
English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour: best for history, sailing and dining
On the south coast, English Harbour is home to Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Shirley Heights lookout, famous for its Sunday sunset parties. Neighbouring Falmouth Harbour is the heart of Antigua’s yachting scene, with marinas, bars and restaurants. Boutique stays here include the Admiral’s Inn, the Inn at English Harbour, Gunpowder Suites and South Point.
Good for: history, sailing, food and a lively evening scene. Less good for: big beaches (those nearby, such as Galleon Beach and Pigeon Point, are smaller) and short airport transfers.
Willikies and the east coast: best for peace and the outdoors
The Atlantic side of the island is quieter and more rugged. It is home to Devil’s Bridge, Long Bay Beach and Stingray City, with all-inclusive options such as Pineapple Beach Club and The Verandah, and Nonsuch Bay further south.
Good for: relaxation, nature and outdoor activity. Less good for: anyone without a car.
Hodges Bay and the north coast: best for quiet, upmarket stays near the airport
The north coast near the airport is quieter and more residential, with properties such as Hodges Bay Resort and Blue Waters.
Jumby Bay: best for total seclusion
A private island resort off the north-east coast, reached only by boat. Exclusive, with prices to match.
Central Antigua: best for exploring the whole island
Few guides mention the middle of the island, but if you want to see all of Antigua, it is the most practical base. From the centre, the east and west coasts, St John’s and English Harbour are all within easy reach. You give up a beach on the doorstep and gain short drives in every direction, a quieter local setting, and usually better value.
This is where we are. LambLion Apartments is on Freemans Main Road near Sea View Farm, about 20 minutes from St John’s and Nelson’s Dockyard, around 15 minutes from the nearest beaches, and about 9 km from the airport.

Types of places to stay in Antigua
All-inclusive resorts
Antigua has a large share of all-inclusive resorts, especially at Dickenson Bay, on the west coast and on the east coast. Great if you want to unpack once and never think about meals; expensive if you plan to explore and eat out.
Boutique hotels and inns
Smaller, characterful places, many of them clustered around English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour.
Villas
Private villas suit groups and families who want space and privacy. Many are in the south and on the west coast, and most work best with a hire car.
Self-catered apartments
Apartments give you a kitchen, a living room and the freedom to eat when and where you like. They are often the best value for medium-term stays, families, remote workers and anyone who would rather spend their budget on experiences than on resort extras. See our self-catering apartments. Surprisingly few guides cover them.
Guesthouses
Simple, friendly and often family-run, guesthouses are a good way to experience local Antiguan hospitality on a budget.

When is the best time to visit Antigua?
The high season runs from mid-December to April, with the driest weather and the highest prices. Late spring and early summer are quieter and better value. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, so travel insurance matters if you visit then. Big dates that push up prices include Antigua Sailing Week in spring, and in 2026, the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (1 to 4 November), Antigua and Barbuda Art Week (11 to 18 November) and the Antigua Charter Yacht Show (4 to 9 December).
Getting around Antigua
- Hire a car if you want to explore. Antigua drives on the left.
- Taxis are not metered, so agree the fare before you set off.
- Buses are cheap and run mainly from St John’s, but routes and times are informal.
- Arriving: V.C. Bird International Airport is on the north-east side of the island, close to St John’s and the north coast.
Practical tips before you book
- Check exactly what is included: taxes and service charges can add a significant amount to the headline rate.
- Look at a map, not just photos: a “short drive” in Antigua can mean 40 minutes.
- Ask about airport transfers. Some properties include them.
- For a week or more, prioritise a kitchen, laundry and reliable Wi-Fi.
- Book direct where you can for faster answers and the clearest terms.

Which side of Antigua has the best beaches?
The west coast is generally the favourite for swimming, because the Caribbean water there is calmer. The Atlantic-facing east coast is wilder, with spots such as Long Bay and Devil’s Bridge.
Where should I stay in Antigua for the first time?
Dickenson Bay if you want a beach on your doorstep and everything organised. Central Antigua if you plan to hire a car and see the whole island.

Jolly Harbour, with its marina, supermarket and calm nearby beaches, or a self-catered apartment where you have a kitchen and room to spread out.
Where should I stay in Antigua for nightlife?

Do you need a car in Antigua?
Not if you stay put at a resort, but a hire car is the best way to explore. Antigua drives on the left. Taxis are not metered, so agree the fare before you set off.
When is the cheapest time to visit Antigua?
Outside the December to April high season. Summer and autumn are quieter and better value, but they overlap with the June to November hurricane season, so take out travel insurance.
