Antigua Carnival 2027 runs from late July to Carnival Tuesday, 3 August 2027, and it is the 70th Carnival since the first one in 1957. That anniversary is going to pull every Antiguan living overseas home for the summer, so the question is not whether to go. It is where you will sleep after J’ouvert.

I stayed at LambLion Apartments in central Antigua in June, and I spent most of that visit walking the garden with the owners, Lionel and Lorilyn Walker. So this guide does two jobs. It sets out what Carnival actually is and how the season runs, from the history to the 4am jam. Then it tells you, plainly, where to stay for Antigua Carnival depending on how much sleep you want, including the honest case for a quiet apartment 20 minutes out of town.

Everything about the festival here comes from the organisers, the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority. Where a 2027 detail has not been published yet, I say so.

When is Antigua Carnival 2027? It runs from late July to Tuesday 3 August 2027

Antigua Carnival 2027 runs from late July to Carnival Tuesday on 3 August 2027, with Carnival Monday on 2 August. Carnival always ends on the first Monday and Tuesday in August, and both days are public holidays in Antigua and Barbuda.

The official Antigua Carnival page run by the Festivals Commission has been sharing a save the date of 20 July to 3 August 2027. Treat the opening date as provisional until the full programme is out, because the first parade has moved by a few days from year to year. The two road days will not move. If you only have a week, build it around Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

Date in 2027What it is
Late July (provisional 20 July)Carnival season opens with the opening parade and the first shows at Carnival City
Sunday 1 AugustEmancipation Day and the Watch Night observance
Monday 2 AugustCarnival Monday, J’ouvert before dawn, then the Monday mas parade
Tuesday 3 AugustCarnival Tuesday, the Parade of Bands and the Last Lap through St John’s

Emancipation Day falls on Sunday 1 August 2027, which puts the whole emotional centre of the festival into one long weekend. Plan to arrive by the Thursday.

What is Antigua Carnival? It is the island’s celebration of emancipation

Antigua Carnival is a summer festival that celebrates the emancipation of enslaved Africans in Antigua on 1 August 1834. That is the reason it sits in August and not before Lent like Trinidad’s. The calypso, the steel pan and the mas all carry that freedom story.

Here is the part most visitors never hear. When the British abolished slavery, most colonies forced the formerly enslaved into years of unpaid “apprenticeship”. Antigua skipped it. Freedom on the island was immediate and unconditional on 1 August 1834, and people took to the streets that very day. Families kept marking the date with picnics and gatherings for over a hundred years after.

The Carnival you will see in 2027 has its roots in two places. The first is the Old Time Christmas Festival, with its iron bands, masquerades and stilt walkers called Moko Jumbies. The second is a one day carnival held on 3 June 1953 for the Queen’s coronation. Antiguans loved that day so much that they lobbied for a yearly summer festival, and according to the Festivals Commission history of Carnival, the first official Carnival took place in August 1957. The Queen Show and the Calypso competition were both held at the Deluxe Cinema. Miss Gloria White was crowned the first Carnival Queen and Mighty Styler won the first calypso crown.

Seventy years later the organisers call it “the Caribbean’s greatest summer festival”. I would take a 70th anniversary of a freedom festival over almost any resort week. It means something.

How long is Antigua Carnival? Around eleven to thirteen days of shows and street parties

Antigua Carnival lasts around eleven to thirteen days, from the opening parade in late July to the Last Lap on Carnival Tuesday night. In 2025 it ran from 25 July to 5 August. In 2026 it ran from 25 July to 4 August.

You do not have to stay for all of it. Most visitors from the UK and the US come for the last five or six days, which covers Panorama, the big competitions, Watch Night, J’ouvert and both road days. If you can stretch to two weeks, you catch the pageants and the first fetes as well, and you see the island quietly preparing. That slower version is what our guide to spending a month in Antigua is built for.

The Antigua Carnival 2027 schedule follows a pattern you can plan around

The full 2027 schedule had not been published when I wrote this. The shape of the season barely changes, though. The Tourism Authority’s 2025 programme is a good guide to the order things happen in.

The opening parade and T shirt mas start the season

The season opens with a parade through St John’s that ends at Carnival City, followed by the opening ceremony and fireworks. T shirt mas is the easy way in. You buy a band’s shirt and jump on the road with them, no costume needed.

The pageants and the Caribbean Queen Show fill the first week

The Queen of Carnival is one of the two competitions that ran at the very first Carnival in 1957. The winner goes on to represent Antigua at the Jaycees Caribbean Queen Show a few days later, with contestants from across the region. There is also the Mr and Miss Teenage Pageant, where secondary school students compete.

Calypso Monarch and Party Monarch are the music crowns

Calypso Monarch is the oldest crown of the lot and still the sharpest. Since 2022 there are two titles, one for Bacchanal and one for Social Commentary, and the social commentary songs are where Antiguans say what they think about the year. Party Monarch, or Soca Monarch, is the high energy one with flags in the air. Melting Pot brings top Caribbean artists to the same stage.

Panorama is the steel band competition, and it is the one I would not miss

Panorama is the steel pan competition, held in the last days before Carnival Monday. Antigua’s steel bands grew out of the old Christmas iron bands, which is why Antiguans are so proud of them. Sit close enough to feel the bass pans in your chest.

Watch Night marks the moment of freedom on Emancipation Day

Watch Night is the emancipation observance, an evening of songs, drumming and iron bands, and it carries the meaning of the whole festival. If you only go to one thing that is not a party, go to this.

Carnival Monday and Tuesday are the two road days

Carnival Monday starts with J’ouvert in the dark and carries on with the Monday mas parade in the afternoon. Carnival Tuesday is the Parade of Bands, when every troupe comes out in full costume, the judges score them, and the Road March is decided. The Last Lap on Tuesday evening is the final street party through St John’s. Then it is over for another year.

Carnival beds go first. Check your 2027 dates now, or send Lionel and Lorilyn a WhatsApp and they will tell you what is still free.

Where does Antigua Carnival take place? Mostly in St John’s and at Carnival City

Antigua Carnival takes place in St John’s, the capital, on the north west coast of Antigua. The parades run through the city streets, and the big shows are held at the Antigua Recreation Ground, which the organisers rename Carnival City for the season.

That matters for where you stay. Every major event happens in or near St John’s, so your daily question is how you get into town and, more importantly, how you get out of it at 2am. Our guide to apartments near St John’s sets out the honest distances.

What time does J’ouvert start in Antigua? Around 3 or 4 in the morning on Carnival Monday

J’ouvert in Antigua starts around 3 or 4 in the morning on Carnival Monday in St John’s and usually winds down around 10am. The name comes from the French creole jour ouvert, meaning daybreak, and the point is to dance the sun up.

You find a jam band, follow it and jump with it along the route. It is paint, powder, mud and oil, steel pan and iron band, and costumes made to make people laugh rather than to win prizes. The Festivals Commission keeps the list of jam bands and iron bands on its website.

My practical notes for J’ouvert.

Then you go home and wash. This is where your accommodation choice suddenly becomes very real.

Is Antigua Carnival safe? Yes, with the same common sense you would use at any big street festival

Antigua Carnival is safe for visitors who use ordinary big festival sense. Families come out for the daytime parades, and there is a whole Children’s Carnival day with its own parade. The road days are crowded and loud and run late, and that is where your common sense needs to be switched on.

Keep valuables out of sight, move with people you know, and do not drink and drive. The police close roads in St John’s for the parades, so check the traffic plan before you drive in. For general advice on travelling in the country, the UK government’s Antigua and Barbuda travel advice is kept up to date.

Where to stay for Antigua Carnival depends on how much you plan to sleep

Where to stay for Antigua Carnival comes down to one trade off. Staying in St John’s puts you on the parade route but gives you almost no sleep. Staying out of town gives you rest, space and a kitchen but means you need a car or a booked taxi. Here are the areas people actually choose. There is more detail in our full guide to where to stay in Antigua.

Staying in St John’s puts you on the parade route

Staying in St John’s means you can walk to J’ouvert and Carnival City. You will also hear every sound system until dawn, and the small guesthouses in town go first. It suits people who want to be in the middle of everything and do not mind the noise.

Staying at Dickenson Bay or Runaway Bay gives you a beach and a short drive into town

Staying at Dickenson Bay or Runaway Bay, just north of St John’s, gives you a beach on the doorstep and a short drive to the parades. These are the island’s main resort strips, so rooms are priced for that, and they fill early for Carnival.

Staying in English Harbour or Jolly Harbour means a longer ride home at dawn

Staying in English Harbour, in the south, or Jolly Harbour, on the west coast, gives you marinas, restaurants and calm water. Both are a long drive from St John’s, and that drive feels much longer after J’ouvert. These suit people who plan to see one or two Carnival events and spend the rest of the time on the water. If sailing is your thing, our Sailing Week accommodation guide covers the south properly.

Staying in central Antigua gives you quiet nights and every road out of the middle

Staying in central Antigua gives you quiet nights, lower prices than the resort strips, and short drives in every direction. LambLion Apartments is on Freemans Main Road in Belleview Estate, between Sea View Farm and Freemans Village. That is about 20 minutes’ drive from St John’s and about 9 km from V. C. Bird International Airport.

For Carnival, that distance is the whole point. You go into town for the shows and the road, and you return to a village and a garden, not a corridor and a sound system. You get eight hours of sleep between fetes, and on Carnival week those hours are worth more than a sea view.

Why a self catering apartment works so well for Carnival week

A self catering apartment works for Carnival because the festival runs on a strange clock. You are out at 3am, you sleep at noon, you eat at odd hours, and you go through a lot of washing. A hotel does not keep that clock. Your own apartment does.

LambLion has 11 apartments, all with kitchens, in three sizes. There are studios for one or two people, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments for couples and groups, free Wi Fi, parking and laundry. That last one is not glamorous, but after J’ouvert you will thank me. A two bedroom apartment also makes sense for a group of friends who want to split the cost and keep one shared kitchen going.

It is also a family run place. Lionel and Lorilyn are Antiguans who live this festival every year, and asking them which jam band to follow, or which taxi driver to call at 3am, gets you a better answer than any concierge. You can read their story in meet the family behind LambLion.

Why you should book Antigua Carnival accommodation early

Antigua Carnival accommodation sells out early because the festival draws thousands of visitors and returning Antiguans from the UK, the US, Canada and the rest of the Caribbean. The 70th Carnival in 2027 will draw more than usual. Every Antiguan family overseas has been talking about “Carnival 70” since the Festivals Commission started using the name.

Flights fill for the same reason. My advice is to lock your accommodation as soon as your dates are settled, then book flights, then plan the fetes. Booking direct with LambLion for two nights or more gets you 15% off the nightly rate, and you deal with the owners rather than a booking platform. If you are staying more than a couple of weeks, look at the medium term apartment rentals as well.

Getting around Antigua during Carnival takes a little planning

Getting around Antigua during Carnival is easy by day and harder at night, so plan your late rides in advance. Taxis in Antigua are not metered, so agree the fare before you get in. Antigua drives on the left, and a hire car is the most flexible option if you are staying outside St John’s.

What to eat at Antigua Carnival, and how to eat well between the fetes

The food at Antigua Carnival is street food and home cooking sold from the roadside. Look out for roast corn, ducana (a sweet potato and coconut dumpling), fungee and pepperpot (the national dish), coconut water straight from the nut, and sugar cake. If you eat plant based like me, the corn, ducana, fungee, fruit and coconut water will carry you a long way, but ask about the pepperpot because it is often cooked with meat.

Carnival also lands in mango season. When I walked the garden at LambLion in early June, Lorilyn stopped at her mango tree.

And here we have our mango tree and we have mangoes coming in maybe the next two months or so.

Two months from early June is Carnival. I asked her what they do with them.

We usually eat them as is. The guest eats and he gets on a whole love mangoes just as it is. And sometimes we use the, we freeze the pulp. And make a drink.

Lorilyn Walker, owner of LambLion

Guests at LambLion are welcome to pick fruit in the garden when it is in season. Lionel was clear about that.

We say that our guests can pick foods when they’re in season, not put any restrictions on anybody.

Lionel Walker, owner of LambLion

He also showed me how he uses the old coconuts that fall around the garden.

That’s the coconut that I can grate. I can make sugar cake. I can put it in dumplin. I can make coconut dumplin with it.

Lionel Walker, owner of LambLion

Picture the morning after J’ouvert. You have washed off the paint, you have slept, and you are eating a cold mango from the tree outside your door. That is the version of Carnival I would book. I wrote more about that garden, fruit by fruit, in my harvest walk with Lionel and Lorilyn.
