One month in Antigua is not a long holiday. It is a short life. And a short life needs a kitchen, a washing machine, a table you can work at and somewhere green to sit when the day is done. A resort gives you none of that. A swim up bar is lovely for four nights. By night twelve you want a pot of rice and peas and your own pillow.
I spent my time on the island at LambLion, a family run block of eleven self catering apartments in the green middle of Antigua, and I watched how the guests who stay for weeks actually live. They cook. They pick fruit. They learn which bus goes where. They stop being tourists around day five. This guide is everything I would tell a friend planning a month here, the practical bits and the bits nobody puts in a brochure.
Is living in Antigua for a month a good idea? Yes, if you set it up like a home and not a hotel
Living in Antigua for a month is a very good idea when you rent an apartment with a full kitchen, hire a car for at least part of the stay and base yourself somewhere central, because the island is small enough to reach every coast in well under an hour. The visitors who struggle are the ones who try to do a month the way they would do a week, in a resort room, eating every meal out.
Antigua is about 108 square miles. The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority puts most journeys at 45 minutes or less. That changes how you should think about where to stay. You do not need to sleep on the beach. You need to sleep somewhere you can reach every beach.
That is why I like the centre of the island for a long stay. LambLion sits on Freemans Main Road in Belleview Estate, between the villages of Sea View Farm and Freemans Village. St John’s is about 20 minutes away, the nearest beaches are around 15 minutes, and V. C. Bird International Airport is roughly 9 km up the road. I have written more about the whole island in our guide to where to stay in Antigua, and about skipping the resort strip entirely in where to stay in Antigua without a resort.

How long can you stay in Antigua without a visa? Most UK visitors are given up to 90 days on arrival
UK citizens can visit Antigua and Barbuda without a visa and are given a stay of up to 90 days on entry, according to the UK government’s travel advice for Antigua and Barbuda. A month sits comfortably inside that. US, Canadian and EU travellers are also visa free for tourism, but the stay you are granted can vary, so check the stamp in your passport before you plan a second month.
Two details trip people up on a long stay. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after the day you arrive, and immigration can ask to see an onward or return ticket. If you want to stay longer than the time you were given, you apply and pay for an extension through the Antigua and Barbuda Immigration Department. Do it before your stamp runs out, not after.
The Nomad Digital Residence is no longer the easy answer for remote workers
Antigua made headlines in 2020 with its Nomad Digital Residence, a two year permit for remote workers earning at least US$50,000 a year. Plenty of blogs still sell it as the way to work from the island. Here is the fine print. Reports in October 2026 say the official programme portal now shows the scheme has ended for new applicants. For a one month stay you do not need it anyway. You are a visitor. Check the current rules with immigration if you are planning anything longer than your entry stamp.
Is living in Antigua expensive? The resort way is, and the self catering way is not
Living in Antigua is expensive if you eat every meal in restaurants and sleep in a beachfront resort, because much of the island’s accommodation is upscale resort stock and food is largely imported. It becomes far more reasonable when you cook for yourself, shop where Antiguans shop and buy what is in season. Over a month, that difference is the whole budget.
A quick money note before you land. The Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) is pegged to the US dollar at about EC$2.70 to US$1, and prices on the island are often shown in either. Ask which one before you pay.
Where to buy groceries in Antigua for a month
The big supermarkets are your weekly shop. The Epicurean supermarket just off Friars Hill Road in St John’s is the largest on the island and keeps long hours, and there are smaller branches and independent grocers around the island. LambLion is about 20 minutes from St John’s by car, which makes one big shop a week easy.
For fruit and vegetables, go to the Public Market at the south end of Market Street in St John’s. Friday and Saturday mornings are the time to go, when the stalls spill into the streets with bananas, limes, sugar apples, eggplants and, when you are lucky, Antigua black pineapple. Go early. Bring small notes. I have pictured it below so you know what you are walking into.

One thing Lionel Walker, who owns LambLion with his wife Lorilyn, told me in the garden has stayed with me every time I buy bananas.
When you go to the market, they tend to look kind of yellow. They spray them with something to make them look yellow. Because people like to see yellow bananas.
Lionel Walker, co owner of LambLion
He is talking about commercial ripening, where imported fruit is held cold and then brought on with ethylene gas in a ripening room. It is legal and common. It is also a very good reason to eat the bananas that ripen on the tree outside your door instead.
Cooking from the LambLion garden cuts the grocery bill and the plastic
This is the part of a long stay at LambLion that I would put first. The garden at LambLion is full of fruit trees, vegetables and herbs, and guests are welcome to pick what is in season, mindfully. Papaya, bananas, mango in season, soursop, golden apple, pigeon peas, spinach, sage, lemongrass, aloe. On a weekend you will eat. On a month you will cook from it properly.
I asked Lionel what his ideal world looked like. He did not hesitate.
My ideal world is where I wouldn’t have to go to the shop to buy anything at all.
Lionel Walker, co owner of LambLion
Then he told me what he had eaten that morning.
Everything I had for breakfast was from the land.
We’ll have potatoes in the morning with spinach, potatoes and spinach with some beans. So you have everything, a balanced breakfast meal.
Lionel Walker

Lionel is also very relaxed about sharing. When I asked how guests use the garden, he told me the family does not put restrictions on anybody, and then laughed about the guest who picked the last breadfruit on his tree. “But yeah, it’s okay.” That is the spirit of the place. Pick what is ripe, leave some for the next person, and ask Lorilyn if you do not know what something is.
Lorilyn keeps the herb and vegetable beds. Her spinach is the kind you barely need to cook.
This spinach doesn’t need much cooking or cooking at all. You know, you just saute it, turn it, saute. I like it like that with my purple onions and some garlic.
Lorilyn Walker, co owner of LambLion
If you want the full story of that garden, I wrote about harvesting fruit, vegetables and herbs at LambLion and about the backyard garden Lorilyn learned from her grandmother.

Planning a month in Antigua? Tell us your dates and we will send you a quote for a medium term stay, usually the same day.
Where to stay in Antigua for a month is a furnished apartment with a full kitchen
The best place to stay in Antigua for a month is a furnished apartment with a full kitchen, laundry and reliable Wi Fi, in a location that lets you reach both coasts and St John’s without a long drive. Long term house rentals usually want six or twelve month leases. Resorts charge holiday rates every single night. A medium term apartment sits in between.
LambLion has eleven medium term apartments in central Antigua, and the layout you choose matters more on a month than a week. This is what each one gives you.
| Apartment | Sleeps | Kitchen | Good for a month if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio (2 units) | 2 | Kitchenette | You are one person or a couple who cooks simply |
| One bedroom (5 units) | Up to 4 | Full kitchen | You want a separate bedroom and a living room to work in |
| One bedroom twin (2 units) | 2 | Full kitchen | You are two friends or colleagues who want separate beds |
| Two bedroom (2 units) | Up to 5 | Full kitchen | You are a family, or visiting relatives at home |
Every apartment has air conditioned bedrooms, free Wi Fi and a workspace, free self service laundry, free parking, fresh linen and towels, and a balcony or patio. The full kitchens have a stove, oven, fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and cookware. You can see every room on the apartments page and in the photo gallery.

I will be honest about the trade off. LambLion is not on the sand. You will drive to the beach, around 15 minutes to the nearest ones. What you get for that drive is quiet nights, birdsong in the morning, a garden to eat from and owners who live the island every day. On a month, I would take that trade every time.
Getting around Antigua for a month is easiest with a hire car
A hire car is the easiest way to get around Antigua for a month, because buses do not run to every village or late at night and taxis are priced per trip, which adds up fast over four weeks. You need your valid home licence plus a temporary Antiguan driving permit, which the Tourism Authority lists at EC$50 and which rental companies normally sort out when you collect the car. Antigua drives on the left.
Many long stay guests do a mix. They hire a car for the first and last week, when they are exploring and shopping, and use buses and the occasional taxi in the middle. Lionel and Lorilyn can help you arrange car hire and airport transfers before you land. Ask them.
Taking the bus in Antigua on a long stay
Antigua’s buses are privately run minibuses that leave from the East and West Bus Stations in St John’s and follow set routes across the island. They are cheap, they are cash only, and they are the best way I know to hear how Antiguans actually talk to each other. Fares are a few EC dollars a ride. Carry small notes, because change is not guaranteed, and check the time of the last bus before you set off in the afternoon.

Can you work remotely from Antigua for a month? Yes, and the time zone helps
Working remotely from Antigua for a month works well, because the island runs on Atlantic Standard Time (UTC minus 4) all year with no clock changes, which overlaps the working day in North America and still leaves a few shared hours with the UK and Europe. What you need on the ground is a proper table, decent Wi Fi and quiet.
Every LambLion apartment has free Wi Fi and a workspace. If your job depends on long video calls, tell the family before you book and they will tell you honestly what to expect. A local SIM from one of the island’s mobile networks is a sensible backup for the days the weather has other ideas.

Healthcare during a long stay in Antigua starts with travel insurance
The main public hospital in Antigua is the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre at Michael’s Mount in St John’s, which runs a 24 hour emergency department, and the emergency number on the island is 911. There are private clinics and pharmacies in and around St John’s for everyday needs.
On a month away, buy travel insurance that covers medical treatment and evacuation, and bring enough of any prescription medicine for the whole stay plus a few days, in the original packaging. That is not a scare line. It is just what grown ups do before a month abroad.
What a normal week looks like on a long stay in central Antigua
A normal week on a long stay in central Antigua looks less like a holiday and more like a slower version of your own life, with the beach as your commute. This is roughly how I would spend it.
- Mornings in the garden. Coffee on the patio, a walk under the banana leaves, a papaya if one is ready. The birds get there first. Lionel will tell you that too.
- Work or slow time until lunch. The light in the apartments is soft by mid morning.
- Afternoons on the coast. West coast for calm swimming water, the Atlantic side for wind and wild views. Our things to do in Antigua page has the list.
- Friday or Saturday at the market. The Public Market in St John’s early, then a coffee in town. If you want to be closer to town on certain days, read our note on apartments near St John’s.
- Sunday breakfast the Antiguan way. Ask Lorilyn about chop up.
- One evening a week out. Sunset at Shirley Heights on a Sunday, or dinner at the harbours in the south.
I did ask Lorilyn about that Sunday breakfast.
We have an Antiguan breakfast on Sunday mornings. We have what we call Antiguan breakfast, and it’s usually with saltfish and what we call chop up.
Chop up is usually the eggplant, maybe pumpkin and some spinach chopped together. It’s cooked, you know.
Lorilyn Walker
I eat plant based, so I skipped the saltfish and had the chop up with bread and Lorilyn’s spinach. It is a whole meal on its own. That is the point of a month somewhere. You stop eating the tourist menu and start eating what the island eats.

What is the best month to spend a month in Antigua? December to April for dry weather, November and May for value
The best time to spend a month in Antigua is December to April, the dry and breezy high season, if you want the most reliable weather, and the shoulder months of November and May if you want lower prices and quieter beaches. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, so a summer or autumn month needs flexible plans and good insurance.
A month also lets you plan around the island’s calendar instead of fighting it.
- November. Antigua and Barbuda Art Week runs from 11 to 18 November 2026.
- December. The Antigua Charter Yacht Show fills the south coast from 4 to 9 December 2026, then the island settles into Christmas and New Year in Antigua.
- January to March. Peak winter getaway season. See what is on in Antigua in January.
- April. The Classic Yacht Regatta and Antigua Sailing Week follow one another in 2027, from 14 to 25 April.
- Summer. Antigua Carnival, the island’s biggest party.
Who stays at LambLion for a month or more
The guests who stay at LambLion for weeks or months are mostly medical students, remote workers, families visiting relatives, and professionals working through a contract or an event season. The American University of Antigua campus in Coolidge is about 11.5 km away by road, which is why students have used the apartments for years.
What they have in common is that they want to live here for a while, not be entertained. If that is you, the family behind LambLion will make it easy. And if you care about how a place runs, LambLion is Green Globe certified, with solar panels, solar water heating and rainwater harvesting. You can read what that means in practice on the sustainability page, and on my Hold The Throne listing for LambLion.

A month in Antigua will not change your life because of the beaches. It will change it because, for once, you lived somewhere the food grew outside the door and nobody was in a hurry. Pick something ripe. Leave some for the birds.
