An Antigua winter getaway swaps grey skies for days in the high twenties, a sea you can swim in every morning and the driest weeks of the Caribbean year. December to March is the season Antigua was made for. It is also the season everyone else wants, so how you plan it decides whether it costs a fortune or feels easy.

I grew up with London winters. Dark by four, damp in the bones, the heating on and the mood off. So I will say it plainly. Winter sun is medicine, and Antigua is one of the best places in the Caribbean to take it.

This guide is the honest version. What the weather actually does from December to March, how long the flights are, why prices jump, and how to keep the trip affordable by cooking for yourself and booking direct. I stayed at LambLion Apartments in the quiet middle of the island, so you will get the view from a family garden, not a resort brochure.

Does Antigua have a winter? No, Antigua stays warm all year

Antigua has no winter in the way Europe or North America does. Antigua sits at about 17 degrees north of the equator, so the air stays warm year round and the change you feel between seasons is mostly about rain, humidity and wind, not cold.

What Antiguans call the cooler months run from about December to March. Daytime highs sit in the high twenties Celsius (low to mid eighties Fahrenheit), the nights drop a few degrees and the trade winds blow steady from the east. You sleep with a fan, not a duvet.

Lionel Walker, who owns LambLion with his wife Lorilyn, put it simply when he was showing me round the garden.

We’re in Antigua and we have a lot of sun all the time.

Lionel Walker, owner of LambLion

He went on to explain how the light changes through the year, and that the shortest day falls in December. Even then Antigua gets roughly eleven hours of daylight. London gets under eight. That difference is the whole point of a winter getaway, my loves. More light, more hours outside, more vitamin D from the source.

What is the weather like in Antigua in winter, month by month?

The weather in Antigua in winter is warm, sunny and drier than the rest of the year, with the driest stretch usually falling between January and April. Showers still pass through, but they tend to be short and they clear fast. The month by month climate guide on Weather2Travel is a useful reference if you want the averages in detail.

MonthWhat to expectGood for
DecemberWarm days in the high twenties Celsius, short showers still possible early in the month as the wetter season fadesChristmas and New Year, the start of the sailing season
JanuaryDry, sunny, breezy, cooler nights, sea around 26 to 27 degrees CelsiusBeach days, hiking, Wellness Month events, yacht arrivals
FebruaryOften one of the driest months, steady trade winds, sea at its coolest but still very swimmableSailing, Valentine’s weekend, quiet walks
MarchDry, slightly warmer days, long sunny afternoonsFamilies on spring breaks, regattas, garden walks

Is Antigua cold in February? No, February in Antigua is warm and dry

Antigua is not cold in February. February in Antigua usually brings daytime highs in the high twenties Celsius and a sea that, while it is at its coolest of the year, still feels like a warm bath to anyone arriving from a northern winter. Pack a light layer for breezy evenings on a hilltop and that is your “winter wardrobe” sorted.

Can you swim in Antigua in January? Yes, the sea stays warm all winter

You can swim in Antigua in January. Sea temperatures stay in the mid twenties Celsius through the winter, warm enough for long swims and snorkelling. The west coast beaches are generally calmer, because they face the Caribbean Sea, while the Atlantic side on the east coast is wilder and better for watching the waves than floating in them.

Is winter outside the hurricane season in Antigua? Yes, it is

Winter in Antigua falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from 1 June to 30 November. That is a big part of why December to March is peak season. Travel insurance is still sensible, but the weather risk that worries people in late summer is not part of a winter trip.

How long is the flight to Antigua from London and New York?

The flight to Antigua from London is roughly eight and a half to nine hours nonstop, and the flight from New York is roughly four and a half hours nonstop. Both land at V. C. Bird International Airport in the north of the island.

From the airport, LambLion is about 9 kilometres, a short taxi ride inland. Taxis in Antigua are not metered, so agree the fare before you get in. The LambLion team can arrange an airport transfer if you ask ahead, which is the least stressful way to arrive after a long flight.

One small tip from experience. Winter flights fill early, especially around Christmas, New Year and the February half term in the UK. If your dates are fixed, book the flight first and the apartment straight after.

Is Antigua busy in winter? Yes, winter is peak season

Antigua is busy in winter because December to April is the island’s high season. Resorts fill, cruise ships call at St John’s several times a week and the popular beaches have more people on them. Prices rise to match, especially at the large all inclusive resorts on the north and west coasts.

Busy is relative, though. Antigua is small and spread out, with a long list of beaches (the tourism board likes to say 365). Most of the crowd stays close to their resort pool. Drive ten minutes in any direction and you can still find quiet sand on a Tuesday morning in January.

The middle of the island is the other quiet secret. Around Sea View Farm and Freemans Village there are no resorts at all. You wake up to birds, fruit trees and the neighbours’ radio, and you drive to the beach you choose that day.

How to keep an Antigua winter getaway affordable

An Antigua winter getaway is most affordable when you book a self catering apartment directly, cook some of your meals and rent a car for the days you want to explore. Those three choices cut the two biggest costs of a Caribbean holiday in peak season, which are the room rate and eating out three times a day.

Book a self catering apartment instead of a resort room

A self catering apartment in Antigua gives you a full kitchen, a fridge you control and space to spread out. At LambLion that means a proper stove, oven and fridge in the one and two bedroom apartments, and a kitchenette in the studios, plus free Wi Fi, laundry and parking. Have a look at the apartments and studios to see the layouts.

Book direct and take the 15% discount

Booking direct is the simplest saving of all. LambLion takes 15% off the nightly rate when you book two nights or more directly with them, instead of through a booking site. Same apartment, same family, less money to a middleman. That is the kind of maths I like.

Shop like a local and cook what is in season

The public market in St John’s is where I would start. Saturday mornings are the busiest and the best for fresh produce. Buy what the farmers are selling that week, not what you would buy at home, and your food bill drops while your meals get better. For the full picture of how far a supermarket run goes, the guide to staying near St John’s covers the shops and the drive.

Then there is the garden. At LambLion, guests are welcome to pick fruit and herbs when they are in season. Lionel told me about it while we walked between the trees, and his answer made me laugh.

We say that our guests can pick foods when they’re in season, not put any restrictions on anybody. And I did have a guest one time, and he picked my last breadfruit that was on my tree. But yeah, it’s okay.

Pick mindfully, and leave some for the next guest (and for Lionel). What is ripe depends on the month, so ask him when you arrive. The LambLion gardens page shows what grows there, and I wrote about the harvest in more depth on the fruit, vegetable and herb harvest at LambLion.

Want winter sun with your own kitchen? Check your dates for December to March, or message the family directly and they will reply fast.

Staying longer makes a winter in Antigua cheaper per night

A longer winter stay in Antigua usually costs less per night than a one week holiday, because you are not paying peak resort rates and you settle into cooking, shopping and moving like a resident. Remote workers, retirees escaping the cold and families visiting relatives often stay three weeks or more.

If that is you, read the guide to spending one month in Antigua and look at LambLion’s medium term apartment rentals. Ask the family about longer stays when you enquire, because they know exactly which apartment works best for a month of working at a desk or cooking for two.

What to do in Antigua in winter

The best things to do in Antigua in winter are the beaches, the sailing events, the historic dockyard at English Harbour, a hike in the hills and a Sunday evening at Shirley Heights. Winter is when the island’s calendar is fullest, so there is usually something on.

Spend your mornings on the calm west coast beaches

The Caribbean side of Antigua has the calmest water in winter. Go early, before the day trippers arrive, and you get the best light and the warmest welcome from the sea. From the middle of the island you can reach the west and south coast beaches in around fifteen minutes by car. The things to do in Antigua page lists the favourites.

Watch the yachts arrive for the winter sailing season

Winter is sailing season in Antigua. The RORC Transatlantic Race starts from Lanzarote on 10 January 2027 and finishes in Antigua, close to 3,000 nautical miles later. The RORC Caribbean 600 starts from Fort Charlotte at English Harbour on 22 February 2027 and loops around eleven Caribbean islands. In February, the Jolly Harbour Valentine’s Regatta runs on the weekend closest to Valentine’s Day.

For the full list of what is on, I keep a separate guide to events in Antigua in January, and the Antigua Sailing Week accommodation guide covers the big regatta at the end of April.

Walk through the history at English Harbour

Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbour is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the restored Georgian naval yard where the British fleet was repaired in the 1700s. It is also a reminder that the stone and timber were laid by enslaved Africans, whose labour built the place. Go with that in mind. The buildings are beautiful, and the story underneath them matters.

Climb above the island for the view

Shirley Heights Lookout sits above English Harbour and its Sunday evening party, with a steel band from around four o’clock and the sunset over the harbour, is the island’s most famous night out. If crowds are not your thing, go on a weekday afternoon for the same view in peace. For a proper hike, Mount Obama in the south west is the highest point on Antigua.

Make Christmas or New Year the reason to go

If your winter getaway falls over the holidays, the guide to Christmas and New Year in Antigua covers the food, the church services and where to see the fireworks. December is also when the Antigua Charter Yacht Show brings the yacht world to English and Falmouth Harbour.

Where to stay in Antigua for a winter getaway

The best place to stay in Antigua for a winter getaway depends on what you want from your days. A beachfront resort suits a week of not moving. A self catering apartment in the centre of the island suits anyone who wants to see the whole of Antigua, cook their own food and pay less in peak season.

LambLion is eleven apartments on Freemans Main Road, between Sea View Farm and Freemans Village, about 20 minutes’ drive from St John’s and about 15 minutes from the nearest beaches. It is family owned, Green Globe certified and run on solar power, rainwater harvesting and a composting garden. When I stayed there I said something on camera that I still stand by.

You just wake up to all of these fruit trees. You can pick some fruit. It’s only like between five to twenty minutes max from anywhere you’d want to be.

Is December, January or February the best time for an Antigua winter getaway?

January and February are the best months for an Antigua winter getaway if you want the driest weather and do not need to be there for the holidays. December brings Christmas, New Year and a festive island, with a little more chance of a passing shower early in the month. March is warm, dry and good for families, but the school holidays in Europe and North America push prices up again.

If I had to pick one window, I would go in the second half of January. The New Year crowd has gone home, the transatlantic yachts are sailing in, the air is dry and the light is soft in the late afternoon. That is when Antigua feels most like itself.

Winter is when the north needs the sun the most. Go where it is, eat what grows there, and spend your money with the families who live there.
