Update, 3 November 2026. Independence Day 2026 has now passed. The next Independence Day is Monday 1 November 2027. The guide below still shows how the weekend works, what to eat and where to stay, so it is a good way to plan next year.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence Day 2026 falls on Sunday 1 November, and it marks 45 years since the country became independent from Britain on 1 November 1981. Monday 2 November is the public holiday. And this year the Commonwealth arrives the very same day, so the island is hosting its own birthday and a world summit on one weekend.
I love a national day. Not the speeches so much as the clothes, the food, the grandmothers who know exactly how things were done. When I stayed with Lionel and Lorilyn Walker at LambLion Apartments in central Antigua, the stories that stuck with me were the everyday ones, how they grew up, what was on the Sunday table, which plant your grandmother reached for when you had a fever. That is what independence looks like close up.
Here is what is on for the 45th, how to spend the weekend as a visitor, and where to stay if you are coming home for it.
When is Antigua Independence Day 2026?
Antigua Independence Day 2026 is on Sunday 1 November 2026, and because it falls on a Sunday, the public holiday is observed on Monday 2 November. The celebrations build for a week before it, with school programmes, a Barbuda day, the calypso competition and National Dress Day, then end with the Ceremonial Parade on the day itself.
Banks, government offices and many shops close on the Monday holiday. Plan your groceries for the Saturday.
When did Antigua gain independence?
Antigua and Barbuda gained independence from Britain on 1 November 1981, and Sir Vere Cornwall Bird became the country’s first Prime Minister. The international airport you land at carries his name, V. C. Bird International Airport.
People often search whether Antigua is still a British colony. It is not. Antigua and Barbuda is a fully independent country and a member of the Commonwealth, with the King as head of state, represented on the island by the Governor General, Sir Rodney Williams. That is why the Commonwealth summit here carries extra weight this year.
Sir Rodney described the anniversary at the launch in August in a line I keep thinking about. Forty five, he said, is “old enough to have memories and young enough to have dreams.” (That is from Antigua News’ report on the 45th anniversary launch.)
What is the theme for Antigua’s 45th Independence?
The theme for Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th Independence is “Renaissance, Rooted in Pride, Bounded by Prosperity for All”, unveiled with the anniversary logo and calendar at Government House in August 2026. The Minister of Sports and Creative Industries, Dwayne George, launched a programme of cultural, educational, sporting and community events running up to 1 November.
Renaissance is the right word. Forty five years in, with the fiftieth on the horizon, the country is asking what comes next.
What is on for Independence 2026 in Antigua?
Independence 2026 in Antigua runs from late October to the public holiday on 2 November, with the Ceremonial Parade on the evening of Sunday 1 November at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium as the main public event. These are the dates I could confirm from the official CHOGM 2026 calendar and the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals listings.
| Date | What is on | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Wed 28 Oct | Schools’ Independence programmes | Schools across Antigua and Barbuda |
| Thu 29 Oct | Barbuda Day and an Evening of Theatre | Check local listings |
| Fri 30 Oct, 8pm | Independence Calypso Competition, and National Dress and Flag Day | Check local listings |
| Sat 31 Oct, 9am to 5pm | Celebrating 45 Years of Independence and Welcoming the Commonwealth | Government House, Independence Drive |
| Sun 1 Nov, 11am | Commonwealth Interfaith Service | St John’s Pentecostal Church House of Restoration |
| Sun 1 Nov, 6.15pm to 7.15pm | 45th Independence Ceremonial Parade, open to the public | Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Sir Sydney Walling Highway |
| Sun 1 Nov, 8.15pm to 11pm | One Commonwealth, One Team cricket celebration, open to the public | Sir Vivian Richards Stadium |
| Mon 2 Nov | Independence Day public holiday | Island wide |
| Mon 2 Nov, 8pm to 10pm | One Commonwealth Night, Many Voices, One Commonwealth, open to the public | Sir Vivian Richards Stadium |
One honest warning. Some earlier listings gave the parade a 7am start, while the official CHOGM 2026 calendar of events on chogm26.gov.ag lists it at 6.15pm. With the summit folded in, times can move. Ask your host on the Saturday and check local radio before you set off.

The Ceremonial Parade is the moment to be there in person
The Independence Ceremonial Parade is the main public event of Antigua and Barbuda’s national day, with the uniformed services, cadets, bands and the national salute. In recent years it has been held at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, and in 2026 it runs from 6.15pm with the stadium open to the public. Straight after, at 8.15pm, Heads of Government and young cricketers share the same field for the One Commonwealth, One Team celebration. A parade and a cricket match with world leaders on one ticketless night. I would not miss it.
National Dress Day is when Antigua wears its own cloth
National Dress Day, on Friday 30 October in 2026, is the day Antiguans and Barbudans wear the national dress or madras, the checked cotton that runs through the island’s clothing history. The national dress itself was designed by the artist Heather Doram. If you are visiting, a madras shirt or head tie from a local maker is the most respectful souvenir you can buy that week, and you will see it worn proudly in offices, schools and churches.
The flag is everywhere too. Designed by the art teacher Sir Reginald Samuel, it carries a rising golden sun for the dawn of a new era, with black, blue, red and white. You can read about every national symbol on the national symbols of Antigua and Barbuda.
Independence 2026 runs straight into CHOGM
Independence 2026 overlaps with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which runs from 1 to 4 November in St John’s. Expect road closures, motorcades and security around town and the stadium. If you are here for the summit as well, my guide to where to stay for CHOGM 2026 has every venue and the drive times.

What do Antiguans eat for Independence?
The national dish of Antigua and Barbuda is fungee and pepperpot, a cornmeal and okra fungee served with a thick pepperpot stew of greens, eggplant, pumpkin and other vegetables, traditionally cooked with salted meat or fish. On a national day it is the plate to try.
I eat plant based, so I asked Lorilyn what the everyday Antiguan table looks like at home. She told me about Sunday mornings.
We have an Antiguan breakfast on Sunday mornings. We have what we call Antiguan breakfast, and it’s usually with saltfish and what we call chop up.
Lorilyn Walker, owner of LambLion
Chop up, she explained, is eggplant, pumpkin and spinach, cooked and chopped together, with sautéed onion on top. The spinach for her Sunday pot came straight from the garden bed we were standing next to, a running spinach that trails over the ground. Hold the saltfish and chop up is a plant based breakfast already. That is one for your notebook.

For the ingredients, the Saturday market in St John’s is the place, with fresh produce, herbs and local fruit piled high. Go early on Saturday 31 October, before the holiday closures.
Then there is the garden itself. Lorilyn grew up the way most country families on the island did.
That’s how most of us grew up, who lived in the country. There was a backyard garden. There were papaya. There were eggplants. Some person had a mango tree or two.
Lorilyn Walker, owner of LambLion
She showed me the lemongrass and said her grandmother called it fever grass, because it was the tea she made when the children had a fever. Forty five years of independence sits on top of generations of that kind of knowledge. At LambLion it still grows outside the door, and guests are welcome to pick herbs and fruit in season. You can see what grows on the LambLion gardens page, or read my piece on the Antigua backyard garden passed down the generations.

How should visitors spend Independence weekend in Antigua?
Visitors should spend Independence weekend in Antigua at the Ceremonial Parade on the Sunday evening, at the beach on the Monday holiday, and in madras on National Dress Day if they arrive in time. This is how I would plan it.
- Friday 30 October. Wear madras for National Dress Day, then find the calypso competition in the evening.
- Saturday 31 October. Market in St John’s in the morning, groceries for the holiday, and an early night.
- Sunday 1 November. A slow morning, then get to the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium early for the 6.15pm parade and stay on for the cricket.
- Monday 2 November. The holiday. Pick a beach (most are 15 to 30 minutes from the middle of the island), then the One Commonwealth Night at the stadium from 8pm.
Wear the colours if you like, carry water, and expect traffic both ways. Licensed taxis have yellow plates, and you should agree the fare before you get in. For more ideas, the LambLion guide to things to do in Antigua covers the whole island, and Visit Antigua and Barbuda carries the official events calendar.
Coming home for Independence? Where returning Antiguans and Barbudans stay
Returning Antiguans and Barbudans coming home for Independence usually need more than a hotel room. They need a kitchen to cook for the family, space for cousins to drop in, and a base that is not at one end of the island when the relatives are spread across it.

That is where a two bedroom apartment earns its keep. At LambLion the apartments range from studios to two bedroom units with full kitchens, living rooms, plus free laundry and parking. Stay a fortnight or a month and the medium term rates come into play. If you are planning a longer return, my guide to spending one month in Antigua covers the practical side.
If you cannot make it home this year, the diaspora is celebrating too. Antiguans and Barbudans in New York held a thanksgiving service in Harlem on 25 October and hold their gala on 21 November, and the association in Toronto holds its 45th Independence gala in Brampton on 14 November.
Where should you stay for Antigua Independence Day?
The best place to stay for Antigua Independence Day is central Antigua, because the parade at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the market in St John’s and the beaches are all a short drive away. From LambLion, on Freemans Main Road between Sea View Farm and Freemans Village, the stadium is about 7 km by road and St John’s about 20 minutes.

LambLion is family owned and run by Lionel and Lorilyn Walker, local Antiguans, and it is Green Globe certified, with solar power, rainwater harvesting and a garden full of fruit trees. You can read how it all works on the LambLion sustainability page and meet the family behind LambLion. For the bigger picture of the island’s areas, see where to stay in Antigua.
Lionel summed up the island to me in the most Antiguan way, standing over a young coconut palm.
That’s how things go in Antigua. I trod on a coconut and I left it here and it goes a coconut plant.
Lionel Walker, owner of LambLion
Forty five years on, the island is still planting itself. Come and see it grow.
