Antigua has nice beaches, and the good ones sit close together. The best beaches in Antigua are on the calm west coast, where Valley Church, Ffryes, Darkwood and Turner’s line one short stretch of road south of Jolly Harbour. Half Moon Bay and Long Bay wait on the Atlantic side, Fort James and Dickenson Bay sit just north of St John’s, and Barbuda’s pink sand is a ferry ride away. From our apartments in the green middle of the island, most of them are 20 to 30 minutes by car.

This guide covers 14 beaches by coast, who each one suits, what you will find on the sand and roughly how long the drive takes from LambLion on Freemans Main Road.

Does Antigua have nice beaches? Yes, enough to try a different one every day of your stay

The tourism authority says Antigua and Barbuda have 365 beaches, “one for every day of the year”. Ask who counted them and you will not get a straight answer. The Antiguan, a travel guide that works as a marketing partner of the tourism authority, asked who counted Antigua’s 365 beaches and answered its own question with “No one can remember.”

The number matters less than the distances. Antigua is small, and the middle of the island is close to every coast. One of our guests proved it on a nine night stay.

Another guest wrote that the apartments are “right in the center of the island, making all the beaches about 20 minutes away.” A third put it at “around half an hour with a car.” Three guests, three slightly different clocks.

LambLion Holiday Apartments sits on Freemans Main Road, between the villages of Sea View Farm and Freemans Village. St John’s is about 20 minutes away and the nearest beaches are around 15. If you are still choosing a part of the island to stay in, our guide to where to stay in Antigua compares every area.

How far are the best beaches in Antigua from LambLion? Most are 20 to 30 minutes by car

We worked out these times in November 2026 from road distances on OpenStreetMap, then rounded them up, because island roads are slower than any map suggests. Treat every figure as approximate. Allow extra time if your route passes through St John’s on a cruise ship day.

Which side of Antigua has the best beaches? The west coast wins for calm water, and the east coast for reef and wind

The west and south west face the Caribbean Sea, on the sheltered side of the island, so the water is usually flat enough to float in. Antigua’s tourism board notes that the beaches of the hilly south west are generally less developed than those around St John’s. The east coast takes the open Atlantic. It is wilder, and the best swimming there is where a reef breaks the waves.

If you only have a few days, spend most of them in the west. If you have a week, give the Atlantic a morning or two. The catch is that the calm side is also the busy side when cruise ships are in. Our Antigua weather month by month guide shows when the sea is warmest and the rain is lowest.

The calmest beaches in Antigua are on the west coast, and five of them sit along a few kilometres of road

Drive to Jolly Harbour, keep the sea on your right and head south. In a few kilometres you pass Valley Church, Ffryes, Darkwood and Turner’s, one after the other, each with a bar close to the sand.

Jolly Beach is a mile of white sand with the marina close by

Jolly Beach is a mile of powder white sand on the Caribbean side, with restaurants, shops and water sports operators within walking distance at Jolly Harbour. Come here when your group wants lunch and watersports in one place.

Valley Church Beach is shallow and calm, which makes it the one for small children

If you are travelling with small children, start at Valley Church. The water is calm and stays shallow, and there is a beach bar with toilets near the sand. It is also a popular cruise excursion, so on ship days you will have company.

Ffryes Beach is the quieter neighbour, with Dennis Cocktail Bar on the hill above

Ffryes is the next bay south, and it rarely feels as crowded as Valley Church. Dennis Cocktail Bar and Restaurant sits on the hillside above the sand. The beach faces west, so this is where to be when the sun goes down. Snorkellers do better at Darkwood next door.

Darkwood Beach is where to snorkel straight off the sand

The tourism authority’s listing for the Darkwood Beach Bar and Restaurant says the beach “is ideal for snorkeling and is safe for swimming,” and the bar serves local food. On a clear day you can see Montserrat across the water. It fills up on cruise ship days, so arrive early.

Turner’s Beach at Johnson’s Point is for a long lunch by the water

A little further south, at Johnson’s Point, is Turner’s Beach Bar and Grill, a popular spot for drinks and food. The beach here is sheltered by the rocky headland. Plan it as the last stop of a west coast day.

The best beaches near St John’s and the cruise port are Fort James, Dickenson Bay and Deep Bay

Fort James is only a few kilometres by road from the cruise pier at Heritage Quay, which makes it the easiest beach for a town day. Antigua’s official visitor guide calls it “a locally popular public beach.” It feels like a town beach, not a resort. The name comes from the old fort on the headland that guards St John’s harbour, and beach bars such as Millers by the Sea sit along the sand. If you want more time in the capital, read our notes on staying near St John’s.

Dickenson Bay, a little further north, is the opposite. The same guide sells it as the full resort beach experience, with hotels, watersports and the island’s evening hotspots along the sand. Go for watersports and a sunset drink. Do not go for peace and quiet.

Deep Bay, on the Five Islands peninsula west of town, is smaller and more sheltered. The wreck of the Andes, a ship that sank in the bay in 1905, lies in shallow water that snorkellers can reach, and Fort Barrington looks down from the headland.

The south coast beaches sit below English Harbour, and one of them needs a walk

Most people drive south for Nelson’s Dockyard and stay for a swim. Pigeon Point, on the edge of Falmouth Harbour, is the classic cooling dip after the dockyard, with a beach bar for a drink and Catherine’s Café on the sand. The water is calm and shallow, which suits children and first time snorkellers.

Galleon Beach is on the English Harbour side. You reach it by car through English Harbour or by water taxi, and it is one of the quieter beaches on the island, with calm water and a reef close to shore. Do not count on a bar being open. Carry water.

Then there is Rendezvous Bay. The tourism authority says it and nearby Doig’s Beach can only be reached by four wheel drive or on foot, which is why they are so quiet. There is no bar and no shade except what you carry in. Go with sturdy shoes, plenty of water and someone who knows the track, and be off the beach well before dark.

Make a whole day of the south. Our post on a day at LambLion ends with sunset at English Harbour, 20 minutes from the apartments.

The east coast beaches face the Atlantic, so Half Moon Bay and Long Bay need a little more care

Long Bay is about five minutes from the village of Willikies, and the tourism authority describes it as completely protected by its reef and a good choice for families. Inside the reef the water is shallow and calm, and the snorkelling starts close to shore. Vendors sell from kiosks on the sand, and Pineapple Beach Club sits at the western end. Devil’s Bridge, the limestone arch the Atlantic has carved at Indian Town, is on the same road, so do both in one morning.

Half Moon Bay is the one on the postcards. The official visitor guide describes it as “voted one of the world’s ultimate beaches,” and the bay is now a national park. It is a long curve of pale sand open to the Atlantic, and the waves can be lively, so look for the calmer water toward the northern end. Facilities are few. Pack water and lunch.

Is it safe to swim in Antigua? It usually is on the west coast, but read the sea first on the Atlantic side

Swimming in Antigua is usually safe on the sheltered west coast, where the sea is calm most days. The Atlantic beaches can have strong waves and currents, and you should not count on a lifeguard. The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service publishes forecasts and issues high surf and small craft advisories when big swells arrive, so look before an east coast day.

Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and a passing storm can stir up even the west coast for a day or two. If you want the steadiest beach weather, our guide to an Antigua winter getaway covers the dry months.

What is the best beach in Antigua? It depends on who is coming with you

There is no single best beach on Antigua island, and anyone who names one has not met your family. This is how we would match them.

For a first beach day, we would choose Darkwood in the morning and lunch at Turner’s. Then decide where tomorrow goes.

Are all beaches in Antigua public? Yes, and the law protects your way onto the sand

Every beach in Antigua and Barbuda is open to the public. Section 50 of the Physical Planning Act 2003 states that “There shall be at least one public landward access to every beach in Antigua and Barbuda.” It goes further. Where there is no other public way in, twenty years of peaceable, open use of a path through private land can establish a public right of way to the beach.

In August 2026 the Development Control Authority repeated the message in a public notice headed “Public Beach Access Is Your Right!” and asked residents to report blocked access, such as gates and fencing.

What the law gives you is the sand and the sea. The sun loungers and towels belong to the hotel. Walk in by the public path rather than through a lobby, and rent a chair from a beach bar if you want one.

What are the best beaches in Antigua and Barbuda? Add Barbuda’s pink sand if you can spare a day

Does Antigua have pink sand beaches? No. Antigua’s beaches are mostly white sand. The pink is on Barbuda, where the tourism board describes “alternating pink and white sand beaches protected by barrier reefs,” coloured by tiny pink shells washed into the coves. Princess Diana Beach, on Coco Point in the south of Barbuda, carries the name of the princess, who visited many times. The ferry operator is frank that “pink sand is seasonal and dependent on sea conditions,” so go for the empty beaches and the birds, and treat any pink as a bonus. Is that worth an early start? For the frigate birds alone, we think so.

The boats are run by Sea Bridge Ferries, which has operated since 2004 as Barbuda Express. The crossing takes about 90 minutes each way. A round trip costs US$120 (EC$325) for adults and US$80 for children aged 3 to 11, according to the operator’s fares page, checked November 2026. Its sailing schedule says boarding is at Jolly Harbour Marina, in front of Sea Dream Restaurant, and on most days the boat leaves Antigua early in the morning and returns from Barbuda in the afternoon. Confirm the dock and the times when you book, because both have changed over the years.

Jolly Harbour is about 20 to 25 minutes from LambLion, so set an alarm. The ferry company does not run tours. Its Barbuda page sends visitors to Hillside Tours for the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, which can only be reached by small boat with a guide. Book that before you sail.

Getting to the beaches from the middle of Antigua is easiest with a hire car

A hire car turns this guide into a plan. You need your home licence and a temporary driving permit, which the tourism authority lists at EC$50, checked November 2026, and which the rental company usually arranges for you. Antigua drives on the left. Taxis do not use meters, so agree the fare before you set off. One guest summed up the options.

For transportation the adventurous can take a bus with public transportation nearby or take a cab or drive a rental car.
