All inclusive is not automatically the better deal in Antigua. It wins if you drink, if you stay put on one beach, and if a short break is the whole point. For longer stays, plant based eaters, families who cook, and anyone who wants to see the island, self catering usually costs less and gives you far more of Antigua.

I stayed at LambLion Apartments, a family run, Green Globe certified self catering stay in central Antigua, in June 2026, and cooked most of my meals there. So this is a comparison with real numbers in it, and with the cases where a resort really is the right choice.

Self catering means you have your own kitchen, and it is the opposite of all inclusive

Self catering means your accommodation comes with a kitchen and you buy and cook your own food, while all inclusive means your meals, snacks and most drinks are paid for in the room rate. They are opposites, so no, self catering is not all inclusive. A self catering apartment in Antigua usually gives you a full kitchen, cookware and Wi Fi, and nothing to eat unless the owners hand you something from the garden.

All inclusive resorts in Antigua generally cover buffet and set restaurant meals, house drinks and non motorised water sports. Premium drinks, spa treatments, some restaurants, excursions and airport transfers often cost extra, and every resort draws that line in a different place. Read the inclusions before you compare prices.

Is all inclusive cheaper than self catering? Not for most stays in Antigua

All inclusive is usually more expensive than self catering in Antigua over a week, even after you pay for groceries and some meals out. This is an illustrative week for two, built from published starting prices. Your dates will cost more or less, but the gap is the point.

A week for two at an all inclusive resort

Jolly Beach Antigua, which Caribbean Journal called arguably the most compelling value all inclusive in the Caribbean in April 2026, had rooms from around US$287 a night on the resort’s own website at the time. Seven nights at that starting rate is about US$2,009 for the room, with food and house drinks included. That is the value end of the island. The same article notes that many beachfront resorts in Antigua are priced significantly higher.

A week for two in a self catering apartment

At LambLion, apartments start at US$110 a night (checked October 2026), and booking two nights or more directly takes 15% off, so seven nights comes to about US$655. Add a basic weekly grocery shop for two of about US$77 (I price it item by item in my guide to the cost of food in Antigua) and four simple dinners out for two at about EC$60 each, roughly US$89, and the week lands near US$820.

Then add what the resort covers and the apartment does not. A hire car, because central Antigua is a driving base. Your drinks. Pantry items. Even with those, a typical week still comes in well under the all inclusive starting price. Taxes and service charges apply to both, so always compare the price with everything in.

Is all inclusive worth it if you don’t drink? Usually not

All inclusive is rarely worth it if you do not drink alcohol, because the open bar is one of the biggest things built into the price, and you will not use it. You are paying for someone else’s rum punch.

The same goes for plant based eaters. A buffet built to please everyone usually has rice, salad and fruit, and then a long row of things you will not touch. I would rather spend that money on a kitchen and a Saturday market run, and know exactly what is on my plate. Coconut water straight from the nut does not need an all inclusive wristband.

Self catering or all inclusive with kids depends on how your children eat

Families with fussy eaters or small children often do better self catering in Antigua, because you control the food, the meal times and the snacks, and the children sleep in their own room while you sit up. All inclusive suits families who want a kids club, a pool by the room and no cooking at all.

The two bedroom apartments at LambLion have a full kitchen, a living area and separate bedrooms, and the garden is a better playground than a buffet queue. Children who have picked a banana off a tree eat it.

Is Antigua cheap? No, but a self catering week can still be good value

Antigua is not a cheap island, and nobody should promise you otherwise. What self catering does is turn a fixed, high resort price into a set of choices you control. You decide whether tonight is a market dinner at home or a restaurant table by the water, and the budget follows your decisions instead of a package.

Value also means what you get for the money. An apartment gives you a kitchen, a living room and often a garden. A standard resort room gives you a bed and a balcony, with the rest of the space shared with every other guest.

Self catering in Antigua does not mean cooking every night

Self catering in Antigua does not mean you cook every meal. Most guests cook breakfast and a few dinners, pack a beach lunch, and eat out when they find somewhere worth it. The kitchen is there to save money on the ordinary meals so you can spend it on the good ones.

At LambLion the garden covered a good part of my mornings, because the fruit was right there on the trees. Cook the ordinary meals, eat out for the ones you will remember. That mix is the whole point.

Why is Antigua so expensive? Imports, taxes and a resort heavy hotel market

Antigua is expensive because most food and goods are imported, government taxes and service charges are added to accommodation bills, and a large share of the island’s hotel rooms are upscale beach resorts. That pushes up prices in restaurants and supermarkets as well.

Self catering does not change the island’s prices. It changes which prices you pay. You skip the resort markup on every coffee and every lunch, and you pay market prices for the food you actually eat.

All inclusive is the better choice in Antigua for a short beach break

An all inclusive is the right call in Antigua if you have four nights or fewer, want the beach outside your door, plan to drink, and do not want to drive. That is a fair choice and I would not talk anyone out of it. You will see less of Antigua, but you will rest.

It also makes sense if the whole trip is a celebration, a honeymoon or a milestone, where not thinking about money for a few days is the gift.

Self catering wins for longer stays and for anyone who wants to see all of Antigua

For a week or more, the numbers swing hard towards an apartment. Antigua is known for having 365 beaches, and from a central base like LambLion both coasts, St John’s and English Harbour are short drives. You can swim somewhere different every day and still cook dinner in your own kitchen. My guide to staying in Antigua without a resort maps out the drive times, and where to stay in Antigua covers every area.

Long stays are where self catering pulls furthest ahead. Winter visitors staying a month or more, students, remote workers and families visiting relatives all end up here. See one month in Antigua and the Antigua winter getaway guide for how that works in practice.

These are the questions to ask before you book either one

I chose self catering at LambLion because I wanted to wake up in a garden

I chose LambLion because I wanted to wake up in a garden, not a lobby. This is what I said into my camera that week, standing between the fruit trees.

The place is absolutely abundant. Really don’t tell them, but I haven’t been to the supermarket. And you just wake up to all of these fruit trees. You can, you know, pick some fruit.

That is the part no all inclusive can sell you. Lionel Walker walked me through his bananas, his breadfruit and his pigeon peas, and the Walkers run LambLion themselves, so the people you book with are the people who grow the food. You can read the story of the family behind LambLion, and my piece on the Antigua vacation rental where you harvest your own fruit goes deeper into the garden.

There is a values side to this too, my loves. When you self cater here, your money goes to a local family, a local market and local farmers. LambLion is Green Globe certified, with solar power, harvested rainwater and a compost fed garden, and my Hold The Throne listing sets out how it measures up. When you buy an all inclusive package, the money goes to the resort.

All inclusive sells you a week of not thinking about food. Self catering gives you a week of eating like you live here. In Antigua, I know which one I would pay for.
