You can stay in Antigua without a resort, and you will see far more of the island when you do. Antigua sells itself on all inclusives, but the island is small enough that a self catering apartment in the middle puts every beach within about half an hour. You eat where you like. You meet the people who live here. And you keep a lot more of your money.
I did exactly this. I stayed at LambLion Apartments, a family run stay in central Antigua, cooked with fruit off the trees, shopped at the market and drove to a different beach every day. This guide covers where to base yourself, how far everything is, what it really costs and the honest trade offs. If you want every area on the island compared, start with my full guide to where to stay in Antigua.
Is Antigua all inclusive, or can you stay somewhere else?
Antigua is best known for all inclusive resorts, but the island also has guesthouses, boutique inns, villas and self catering apartments that let you stay without a resort. Most travel sites lead with the all inclusives because that is where the advertising money is. That is all.
Look past the first page of results and the options open up.
Antigua hotels that are not all inclusive are easier to find than you think
Antigua hotels that are not all inclusive fall into four groups. Boutique inns around English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour, family run guesthouses, private villas, and self catering apartments like LambLion, where you get a kitchen, a living room and a key, and nobody tells you when dinner is.
- Boutique inns suit couples who want history and restaurants on foot.
- Guesthouses are the cheapest way in, simple and personal.
- Villas suit groups, and nearly all need a hire car.
- Self catering apartments suit families, remote workers and anyone staying more than a few nights. See the self catering apartments at LambLion for what you get.

Why I chose an apartment over an all inclusive resort in Antigua
An apartment beats an all inclusive in Antigua when you plan to explore, because you stop paying for meals you are not there to eat. That is the fine print of the wristband. If you spend your days at Half Moon Bay and Shirley Heights, the buffet you prepaid sits there without you.
Here are the receipts. In April 2026 Caribbean Journal named Jolly Beach the best value all inclusive in the Caribbean, with rooms from around US$287 a night. That is the value end. LambLion’s apartments start at US$110 a night on the apartments page (checked October 2026), with 15% off when you book two nights or more directly. Taxes apply to both.
The difference pays for a hire car, a boat trip and a lot of fresh fish.
And there is the food itself. On a resort you eat what the kitchen buys in bulk. In an apartment you choose. Lionel, who owns LambLion with his wife Lorilyn, put the ideal plainly when I asked him.
My ideal world is where I wouldn’t have to go to the shop to buy anything at all.
Lionel Walker, owner of LambLion
He is closer to it than most. The garden grows mango, papaya, banana, soursop, golden apple, breadfruit, coconut and more herbs than I could name. Guests are welcome to pick.
We say that our guests can pick foods when they’re in season, not put any restrictions on anybody. And I did have a guest one time, and he picked my last breadfruit that was on my tree. But yeah, it’s okay.

What staying in central Antigua without a resort looks like day to day
A day at LambLion starts in the garden and ends wherever you feel like driving. I would pick fruit for breakfast, take the car to a beach on one coast, buy fish or vegetables on the way home and cook with herbs from the beds outside.
Sunday morning is the one to plan for. Lorilyn told me what an Antiguan Sunday breakfast looks like, and it is worth making yourself.
It’s Sunday morning. We have what we call Antiguan breakfast, and it’s usually with saltfish and what we call chop up spinach.
Lorilyn Walker, owner of LambLion
Saltfish is salted, dried cod, soaked and cooked with onion and pepper. Chop up is a soft mash of greens and vegetables. If you eat plant based like me, the chop up and the fresh bread are the meal, and the garden spinach makes it.
The herb beds have their own stories. Lemongrass grows thick here, and Lorilyn grew up with another name for it.
That’s lemongrass. And my grandmother would call it the fever grass. And we’ll make tea with it.
Lorilyn Walker, owner of LambLion

For everything the garden does not grow, there is the public market in St John’s, about 20 minutes away. Lonely Planet notes that the market spills into the surrounding streets on Friday and Saturday mornings, and that matches what I saw. Go early, take small notes and a bag, and buy what is in season.

How far is everything from LambLion in central Antigua?
Everything in Antigua is within about 35 minutes of LambLion, because the apartments sit in the middle of the island on Freemans Main Road, between Sea View Farm and Freemans Village. Here are the rough drive times on a normal day.

| Place | Rough distance | Drive time from LambLion |
|---|---|---|
| Sir Vivian Richards Stadium | 7 km | About 15 minutes |
| St John’s (city centre and market) | 8 km | About 20 minutes |
| V. C. Bird International Airport | 9 km | About 15 to 20 minutes |
| Nearest beaches | About 15 minutes | |
| Jolly Harbour and Jolly Beach | About 20 minutes | |
| Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour | About 20 minutes | |
| Shirley Heights | About 25 minutes | |
| Dickenson Bay | About 25 minutes | |
| Darkwood Beach and Valley Church | About 25 minutes | |
| Devil’s Bridge and Long Bay | About 30 minutes | |
| Half Moon Bay | About 30 to 35 minutes |
That table is the whole argument for staying central. From a west coast resort, Half Moon Bay is a long day out. From the middle, it is a morning swim.
The one thing you need is transport. Hire a car if you can (Antigua drives on the left), or lean on taxis and agree every fare first. Guests in LambLion’s reviews mention Lionel helping them arrange a rental car, so ask when you book.
Want a kitchen, a garden and the whole island within half an hour? Check your dates at LambLion, or message the family directly.
Is Antigua cheap if you skip the resort?
Antigua is not a cheap island, but skipping the resort is the single biggest saving you can make there. Much of the food in the supermarkets is imported, so a full trolley costs more than at home. The fix is to shop like a local. Buy fruit, vegetables and fish at the market, cook most breakfasts and dinners, and eat out for the meals that matter.
Rent the room for what it is. A bed, a kitchen, a base. Then spend on the island itself, the boat to Barbuda, the hike, the Sunday at Shirley Heights.
The honest trade offs of staying in Antigua without a resort
Staying in Antigua without a resort means trading convenience for freedom, and some people will miss the convenience. I would rather you know before you book.
- No beach at the door. The nearest beach is about 15 minutes away. You will drive to swim.
- You need a car, or taxi money. Without one, the centre of the island feels quiet.
- You cook, or you go out. There is no buffet at 7 pm. For me that was the point.
- No kids club, no evening show. Nights are quiet, birds and crickets.
- You deal with a family, not a front desk. Lionel and Lorilyn answer the messages themselves. Most guests count that as the best part.

An all inclusive resort is still the right choice for some trips
An all inclusive resort is still the right choice for a short beach break where you never want to plan a meal or leave the sand. If you have four nights, no car and one goal, which is to lie still, book the resort. I mean it. Everyone else, read on.
Your money stays on the island when you skip the resort
When you skip the resort in Antigua, more of what you spend reaches local hands, the family who host you, the market vendors and the small restaurants. At LambLion that also means a Green Globe certified stay with solar power, solar hot water, rainwater harvesting and composting. You can read the detail on the sustainability page.

It means relationships too. Lionel showed me a lime tree in the garden and told me who planted it.
This was planted by one of my guests who came to stay with us about six continuous years.
Lionel Walker, owner of LambLion
Six years in a row. Nobody does that at a resort. Read more about the family behind LambLion, and the story of Lorilyn’s garden, passed down four generations.
